About the CBMA

New ATM machine

With operations in more than 1,500 rural and urban areas across Canada, the CBMA and its member organizations provide Canadians with convenient and alternative access to currency. CBMA members represented more than 15,000 (26 per cent) of all Interac connected ATMs in Canada in 2008, as well as 33 per cent of all Interac routed ATM currency withdrawal transactions.

The CBMA works to provide its members with:

  • Information and research on current ATM regulations and industry issues:
  • Assistance with legislative compliance and communications
  • A unified point of contact for media and other third party information requests
  • Industry representation on key issues that affect all members
  • Consistent positioning and messages on regulatory issues
  • Coordinated legal resources for the resolution of common industry issues

As part of its mandate, the CBMA works to provide all Canadians with the benefits of non-bank ATM networks including:

  • Increased cash availability for Canadians
  • Assistance with legislative compliance and communications
  • Greater access to ATMs in rural Canada where many banks are not located
  • Increased customer convenience
  • Reduction in capital costs for banks
  • Ability for business owners to provide cash withdrawal services to their customers
  • Improved sales and easier cash management for merchants

Mission Statement

The Canadian Bank Machine Association advocates for a regulatory environment that encourages competition and does not intentionally create more value for one Interac member over another. It strives to provide a voice for the private ATM industry in Canada and act as a public resource for both consumers and regulatory stakeholders. Above all, the CBMA is committed to the integrity of the payments system and is dedicated to the elimination of ATM fraud.
